Quest for the World Surgeon of Earth

Summary: This project has three purposes: 1) to dramatize the need for a global plan; 2) to help people to correct unrealistic expectations regarding who has the right to present a plan; and 3) to help people think critically about global plans. This plan has a similar purpose to Project Nightingale, but takes a different approach.

Currently most people tend to be dismissive of global plans to change the world. People prejudge the person or group as being hopelessly idealistic, naďve, or arrogant for even making the attempt. Part of the problem comes from how many people unconsciously expect a major world leader, or charismatic savior-type (great soul) to be the only kind of person who has a right to offer a plan. We feel that this expectation is too stringent, and it may prevent someone or some group that has an adequate plan from being recognized and accepted.

To help correct people’s expectation, we offer the term “world surgeon” as a contrast to “world savior.” We say that, if on an individual level, people will go to a minister for spiritual problems and a doctor or surgeon for medical problems, there ought to be a similar division of labor at the global level, too. In other words, don’t expect spiritual guides to offer economic/environmental diagnoses and plans; and by the same token, don’t demand that people who have new and powerful methods must be charismatic father-figures. We will even remind people that they might choose an arrogant surgeon for their child’s operation, if he or she happens to have the best skills. So people should apply a similar pattern of discriminations to the job of devising a diagnosis and a set of operations to “heal” humanity.

Practically, this project would be to make provocative videos regarding four potential world surgeons/surgical teams. We would be highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of four plans:

·        Lester Brown’s Plan B 3.0

·        The Global Marshall Plan

·        David Pollard’s Plan (from his ‘How to Save the World’ Blog)

·        Group Genie’s Mighty Plan

We would also be seeking other realistic plans—plans with steps and actionable tasks.

To dramatize the importance of this plan, we’d also share what could be called the World Surgeon Narrative (or World Surgeon Myth.)  The narrative goes like this: Let’s assume that in the universe there are several planets that develop intelligent life. In all these worlds, the intelligent life form’s civilization starts out in a primitive state. But eventually the life form advances scientifically and dominates the planet. It becomes very likely that the life form reaches a state where it begins to harm the life-support systems of its planet through overpopulation. So most intelligent life forms pass through what we can call a coming-of-age crisis. A crisis that humanity is now facing. In some of these worlds, there is no viable plan to manage the complex and competing crisis. That life form perishes. In other cases, a plan is advanced by an individual or group. That group acts like a planetary surgeon—operating on the whole civilization by means of a plan and supporting methods. And while we can imagine that there are many spiritual guides in the history of a world—we have had Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed and perhaps others—each planet has at most one world surgeon or surgical team. That’s because there is only one planetary coming of age period in the history of any world.—So Group Genie is questing to find, fete, magnify and announce the World Surgeon of Earth.

Besides these four plans we encourage different universities, foundations, and think tanks to try to field their own entries into one of the most pivotal contests in human history.—Of course, we want to strike a balance between playful melodrama, as if we’re anointing a planetary king, and some serious analysis of the various plans and approaches.

Plans and Needs: Trial-balloon this idea to see if people can catch the wave.

Potential Impact: This project demonstrates that we are open-minded and collegial. It could also help publicize the best plan or plans.
